Training on pavement design

The objectives of the training course are as follows:

• Know about the standards and state-of-the-art in the design of road pavement structures.
• Be able to appraise the design of road pavement structures in detailed design studies, drawings and reports.

Topic 1: Pavement structure

• Basic concepts: the various parts of a pavement, the role of each layer.
• The various types of pavements:
  • flexible pavements;
  • semi-rigid pavements;
  • rigid pavements;
  • composite pavements;
  • inverted pavements.
• Materials from the formation level to the wearing course: hydrocarbon materials, cementious materials, untreated materials and soils.

Topic 2: Design of new pavements

• Traffic characterisation.
• Characterisation of the soil of the formation level, and of materials, for the design purposes.
• Main design methods.
• The French rational pavement design method.
• The Alizé design software developed by the French institute of science and technology for transport, development and networks (IFSTTAR), ex LCPC.

Topic 3: Pavement strengthening design

• The strengthening design general process.

Deteriorated pavement characterisation and pavement strengthening calculation.

The services provided for this training course are as follows:

• recruitment of the expert trainer and management of the contracting process;
• design, approval and dispatch of the training materials;
• organisation of the training logistics in Senegal;

training evaluation and delivery of certificates to the participants.
