Training on the Calculation and Monitoring of Indicators

Preparation and facilitation of a training course on the calculation and monitoring of indicators for five managers and agents of the SWIOFish2 (Second South West Indian Ocean Fisheries 2) project, financed by the World Bank. The training course took place at the Forhom Institute in La Rochelle (France), from 1 July to 9 July.

The training objectives were as follows:

• being familiar with the tools needed to choose, calculate and use indicators;
• understanding the role of indicator monitoring in the project management cycle.

The topics dealt with during the training course were the following:

Topic 1 – Features of indicators

• Definition and typology of indicators.
• Qualities of indicators (World Bank, IMF, Eurostat, SMART and other criteria).
• Indicator metadata (detailed characteristics: description, development).

Topic 2 – Provision of indicators

• Selection of indicators (technical relevance, statistical relevance).
• Data collection: different types of survey.
• Data statistical processing: indicator calculation methods.
• Data quality, with the description of the data flow.

Topic 3 – Use of indicators

• Identification and use of the existing databases: national and international websites, public data sources, etc.
• Presentation of indicators: statistical tables, graphs, maps.
• Analysis of indicators: interpretation of results.
• Communication and use of the data collected by the monitoring system.

Assessment in other project’s activities (project management, policy formulation, etc.).

The services provided for this training course consisted of the following:

• recruitment and management of the contracting of expert trainers;
• design, validation and dispatch of the training materials;
• preparation and implementation of the logistics of the training course;

training evaluation and provision of certificates to the participants.
